Contractor accommodation in Barrow-in-Furness
A work stay can involve seven nights a week, a few nights around a shift pattern, or a longer move. Compare the total charge for your actual dates and the terms you need. A lower nightly or weekly headline does not settle the choice by itself.
Compare quotes on the same basis
| Option | Price basis | Monthly comparison | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotel or aparthotel | Get a quote for your dates | Quoted nightly charge × paid nights, plus extras | Room type, kitchen access, parking, cancellation and any meals or other charges |
| Nightly contractor digs or serviced accommodation | Get a quote for your shift pattern | Count the nights you must pay for, including any minimum stay | Whether the charge is per person or for the whole accommodation, bills and terms |
| Weekly room adverts | Check each advert's rent and bills | Weekly charge × charged weeks; ×52÷12 gives an average month | Room type, bills, deposit, notice and charges while you are away |
| Outstanding Property | From £135 a week | From £585 | Furnished double, desk, TV, all bills, video tour, private landlord |
The Furness Room Rent Index records dated asking rents in room-offered adverts on one portal. It is not a hotel or nightly-digs survey, and its figures do not establish the cost or terms of a quote for your stay. The monthly figure for our weekly rent uses ×52÷12; it is an average-month comparison.
Use a printable quote comparison worksheet
Download the contractor quote worksheet (PDF, one A4 page). Its blank columns are for your actual written quotes; it contains no live prices or availability.
- Use the same stay. Record dates, people, room requirements and every charged night or week, including minimum stays and time away. For varying rates or part-weeks, ask for a written whole-stay quote rather than assuming a pro-rata rate.
- Include each cost once. Add excluded bills and other required costs to the accommodation total. Write “not quoted” for missing amounts, not zero.
- Separate upfront cash. Record deposit and advance-rent amounts, due dates and refund or credit conditions separately. Do not add advance rent twice or count a refundable deposit as an extra stay cost.
- Compare terms as well as totals. Check cancellation, notice and charges while away, plus facilities and the journey to your actual reporting entrance. A lower total does not establish equivalent accommodation or tenancy rights.
An illustrative cost comparison
Assumptions, not market quotes: take a nightly charge of £30 and a weekly charge of £135. Seven paid nights cost £210 a week; five paid nights cost £150. Over an illustrative 26-week stay, those nightly totals are £5,460 and £3,900 respectively, compared with £3,510 at the weekly charge. The differences are £1,950 and £390.
At two paid nights a week the nightly example costs £60 a week, below the weekly example. Count all charged nights and weeks, not just the nights you plan to sleep there. These examples assume unchanged charges with no extras, do not compare equivalent room standards or tenancy rights, and are not guaranteed savings. Ask about bills, minimum charges, cancellation and notice before deciding.
What to check before you book anything
- What "bills included" covers. Gas, electricity, water, council tax and Wi-Fi should all be in. Ask about fair-usage caps. (Ours: everything, no cap.)
- Who else lives there and for how long. A house of long-term working tenants is a different life from a rotating nightly house.
- The paperwork. Ask for the agreement terms, an inventory and the deposit arrangements that apply to your tenancy type. An assured periodic tenancy agreement can be written or spoken; missing paperwork does not by itself mean you have no rights. See tenancy agreements for room renters.
- Licensing. A large HMO needs a licence where five or more people from more than one household share toilet, bathroom or kitchen facilities and at least one tenant pays rent or has it paid by an employer. Smaller HMOs may also need a licence locally. Ask the council what applies and check the licence and relevant safety records separately. See our HMO licence guide.
- Notice. On a periodic tenancy you give two months. If your contract can be cut short, ask how the landlord handles that. (Ours: tell us early and we'll be flexible if we can re-let quickly.)
- Parking and kit. Where you park, where the tools go.
- Distance to your gate. Check the route to your actual reporting entrance at both ends of the shift, including walking, parking and any onward transport.
Paperwork and licensing sources checked 15 October 2026: GOV.UK assured periodic tenancy agreements and HMO licensing. These explain general rules, not the compliance of a particular property.
How we work with contractors
You get a furnished double room from £135 a week with every bill included, on a periodic tenancy with a protected deposit, in a house of working adults. Rent is invoiced monthly and itemised so you can claim it if you're entitled to. Agencies and travel desks are welcome to ring — the tenancy is always with the person who lives there.
Planning a work stay. Tell us your work location, start date and expected length of stay on the interest list. We’ll contact you if a room suits your requirements.
Expenses and tax
Accommodation needed for qualifying business travel may attract tax relief, but an assignment under 24 months does not automatically qualify. Fixed-term employment and intermediary arrangements can affect the result. Read our working-away expenses guide, including the detailed HMRC temporary-workplace rules, or ask your accountant; we'll give you the invoices either way.
