Getting to work from Dalton
- BAE Systems, Barrow shipyard. Check Dalton to Barrow trains and onward travel to your actual workplace entrance. Include both station walks and the trip home after your shift.
- Furness General Hospital. Use the hospital stop in the bus planner and confirm that the individual journey calls there. If driving, check traffic, staff parking and the walk to your department.
- Barrow town centre or Ulverston. Compare dated train times with the bus stops you would use. Check evenings, Sundays and the return journey separately.
- Port, Walney or another work site. Confirm the exact site and entrance with your employer before choosing a route. A town or station destination is only part of the journey.
Compare the journey from the particular room at your shift start and finish times. Town-wide driving estimates do not establish your door-to-door trip; include traffic, parking, connections and walking.
Living in Dalton without a car
Dalton has its own railway station. It is unstaffed and has a ticket machine; Northern's Dalton station page lists its facilities. Use Northern's journey planner for your travel date, including the trip home after a late shift. Allow time to get from your room to the station and from Barrow station to your workplace.
For hospital work, the NHS travel page for Furness General Hospital confirms that Stagecoach route 6 serves the hospital. Check the Stagecoach journey planner using the hospital as your stop and your actual working hours. Ask your employer which entrance you need before choosing a journey.

Why people choose Dalton over Barrow
Space and quiet, mostly. You get a small-town high street (butcher, bakery, pubs, a Co-op and a Tesco), Dalton Castle and the market square, and walking straight into the fields from the edge of town. For hospital or shipyard shifts, compare the actual route and working hours before choosing a room. The trade-off is fewer big shops and a smaller night out; check the trip to Barrow if those matter to you. Our Dalton or Barrow? guide lays it out properly.
