Rooms for Furness College and University of Cumbria Barrow

If you are starting at Furness College, on an apprenticeship, or on a health course at the University of Cumbria's Barrow campus, plan around your teaching site, placement location and timetable before choosing accommodation. We let furnished rooms in Barrow-in-Furness and Dalton for working adults, including eligible apprentices and students on placement.

What you get

Who this suits

Apprentices at Furness College doing their training alongside a job at the yard or a local firm; nursing, midwifery and allied health students at the University of Cumbria's Barrow campus, including those on placement at Furness General Hospital; mature students who have moved to Furness for the course; and lecturers, technicians and support staff at either institution. If you are on placement at the hospital, that page covers the walk and the shift patterns in more detail.

Placements, early starts and shift patterns

A health placement is not a nine-to-five, and neither is an apprenticeship. That is exactly the household our houses already are: people who leave early, come back tired, and want a hot shower and a quiet evening rather than a party. Rooms are set up so you can rest and work in them — bed, desk, storage, TV — instead of competing for the living room.

Where to live if you are studying in Barrow

Choose around the site you attend most often: a teaching campus and a hospital placement may need different routes. Furness College publishes separate campus information, so confirm which applies to your course. Compare Barrow and Dalton using the full journey, transport at early or late hours, and your budget. Our moving guide and Dalton or Barrow? explain the town options and dated market asking rents.

Renting privately for the first time

If this is your first tenancy, the things to check are the same everywhere: what "bills included" really covers, whether the deposit goes into a government protection scheme, whether there is an inventory, and how much notice you have to give. We answer all four in how renting with us works, and the short questions — bills, council tax, guarantors, notice — cover the rest.

Student council-tax guidance checked 15 October 2026 against GOV.UK’s full-time student guidance. Check your own course and household circumstances with the council.

Common questions

Is there student accommodation in Barrow-in-Furness?
The University of Cumbria describes an evolving mix of shared housing and other accommodation options for its Barrow students. Check its Barrow accommodation guidance for university support. For a private room, compare the bills, tenancy terms and travel to your actual campus or placement site.
Do you take students?
We take working adults, and that includes apprentices, nursing and health students on placement, and mature students with an income. We still take references, an affordability check and a right-to-rent check, and a guarantor is sometimes asked for — see do you need a guarantor?
How far are your rooms from the campuses?
Confirm which campus or placement site you need, then check the full door-to-door journey at your class or shift times. Barrow and Dalton have stations, but the train journey is only part of the route. Walking distance depends on the particular room and destination; ask about the route before deciding.
How much is a room, and are bills included?
From £135 a week with every bill included — gas, electricity, water, council tax and Wi-Fi. See the Furness Room Rent Index for what the rest of the market asks.
Do I pay council tax as a student?
GOV.UK says households made up entirely of full-time students do not have to pay Council Tax; mixed households may still have a bill or qualify for a discount. Check eligibility and responsibility with the council. Ours is included in the rent either way — the council tax question explains it.
