Cooking on a budget in a shared house
Cooking at home is usually cheaper than takeaways, and a few habits make it easier in a shared kitchen.
Plan and shop
- Pick three or four meals for the week and shop with a list.
- Cheap staples such as rice, pasta, oats, tinned tomatoes, beans and frozen vegetables go a long way.
- Check use-by dates and use up fresh food first.
Batch cooking
Cook a larger portion and keep the rest for lunch or the freezer. Cool leftovers quickly, store them covered, and reheat them until piping hot.
Space and sharing
- Agree a shelf or box in the fridge and cupboard and label your food.
- Ask before using someone else's food, and replace it if you do.
- Some housemates share basics or cook together once a week; agree this openly.

Common questions
How can I save money on food in a shared house?
Plan a few meals, shop with a list, and batch cook so that leftovers become lunches or freezer meals.
Should housemates share food shopping?
Some do for basics like oil and rice, but many prefer to buy their own. Agree it clearly, so nobody feels they pay more than their share.
How do I make the most of limited fridge space?
Use one shelf or box, label what is yours, and keep to what you will eat in a few days.
