Dalton or Barrow?
Compare the town and the complete journey to your workplace. Barrow is the town with the shipyard, the station, the shops and the nights out. Dalton is the small market town on the hill behind it with a castle, a proper high street and fields on three sides. Here's how they compare for someone renting a room to work at the yard, the hospital or the port.
The commute
- BAE Systems. Confirm the entrance you need. From Dalton, check trains to Barrow plus onward travel; from either town, check the full walk, cycle or drive at your shift times.
- Furness General Hospital. Compare the actual room-to-department route. Check a bus that calls at the hospital, or driving and staff parking arrangements. Neither town name guarantees the shorter trip.
- Port, offshore base or gas terminal. Ask for the confirmed reporting site and entrance. Check the complete journey and return trip; different workplaces are not interchangeable destinations.
- Barrow station, Ulverston or onward rail. Use your travel date to check train times, connections and station walks. Check the last useful return service, including on Sundays.
For Dalton trains, use Northern's journey planner and its Dalton station information. The FGH travel page identifies Stagecoach route 6; use the bus journey planner with the hospital stop and your working hours. Check the individual journey and current operator updates.
Driving comparisons need the particular room, workplace entrance and shift times. Include traffic, parking and walking. For public transport, include the room-to-stop journey, connections and the walk at the other end, as well as the trip home.
Transport sources reviewed 15 October 2026. These planning links do not establish a fixed travel time or a town-wide winner for your commute.
What you get in Barrow
- All the shops: the town centre, the market, the retail parks, every supermarket.
- The station, the bus station, the football and rugby, the cinema, the pubs and restaurants.
- Check the walking route from the particular room to your actual yard entrance before deciding.
- Our SpareRoom count on 2 September 2026 found 127 priced room adverts in Barrow and 5 in Dalton. This is a portal snapshot, not a count of all rooms in either town.
- The trade-off: it's a town of 57,000 with a busy centre, some tired streets, and more noise.
What you get in Dalton
- Quiet. Streets that empty by nine, dark skies, birdsong at shift-change time.
- A real high street: butcher, bakery, Co-op, Tesco, chemist, pubs with food, a market square and Dalton Castle.
- Walks from the door — Furness Abbey is a footpath away, and the fields run up to the fells.
- A leisure centre and a station on the Furness Line.
- Compare the route to the hospital from the particular room rather than choosing on the town name alone.
- The trade-off: fewer big shops, a smaller night out, and you'll want a car (or the train timetable) for the yard.
Cost
Our count on 2 September 2026 found 5 priced Dalton adverts, asking £100–£132 a week with a median of £127. The 127 priced Barrow adverts had a median of £135. These are different groups of adverts, with bills and conditions varying. The Dalton sample is small; it does not establish a typical town rate or a like-for-like price comparison.
The following price statement concerns our offer rather than a finding about all local house shares: A double room in a professional house share with bills included is £135 a week in either town — ours are. See the Furness Room Rent Index.
