Laundry and drying clothes in a shared house
A shared washing machine runs smoothly when people take turns, empty it promptly and dry clothes where air can move.
Sharing the machine
- Agree rough days or times, especially if several people work shifts.
- Take your wash out as soon as it finishes so others can use the machine.
- Use your own detergent, and clean the filter or wipe the door seal if the house agrees to share that job.
Drying clothes
- Use a drying rack in a ventilated spot, and open a window or use the extractor where there is one.
- Avoid drying lots of washing in a closed bedroom, which can cause condensation; see damp and mould.
- Keep racks out of hallways and away from exits.
If something goes wrong
Report leaks, odd noises or a broken machine to the landlord promptly; see repairs in a rented room. Check what the machine and drying options are for your house when you view.

Common questions
How do we share a washing machine?
Agree rough times or take turns, and take your wash out promptly so the next person can use it.
Where should I dry my clothes?
Use a drying rack in a ventilated spot, with a window open or a fan on, rather than on radiators in a closed room.
What if the washing machine breaks?
Tell the landlord straight away with what you noticed, and do not try to repair it yourself.
