Smoking and vaping in a shared house
Smoke and vapour travel through shared homes. Clear expectations protect safety and keep the peace.
House rules
- Many shared houses ask residents not to smoke or vape indoors. Check your agreement and any house rules before you move in.
- If smoking outside is allowed, use a bin or ashtray and keep doors closed behind you so smoke stays out.
- Do not leave cigarette ends, vape pods or lighters where others will find them.
Fire safety
- Never cover, remove or disable a smoke alarm; see landlord safety responsibilities.
- Put cigarettes out fully, and never smoke in bed or when drowsy.
- Charge vapes with the right charger, and not unattended or under bedding.
Being considerate
If smoke or vapour bothers you or a housemate, raise it kindly and early; see living with housemates. If it continues, tell the landlord.

Common questions
Can I smoke in my room?
Many shared houses ask residents not to smoke or vape indoors. Check your agreement and house rules, and ask the landlord if unsure.
Why does fire safety matter more in a shared house?
Several people live under one roof, so a fire affects everyone. Never disable a smoke alarm, and put cigarettes out fully.
What if smoke bothers me?
Raise it calmly with the housemate first, then tell the landlord if it continues.
