Staying warm in a shared house in winter
Cold weather is easier when everyone knows how the heating works and agrees a few simple habits.
Use the heating sensibly
- Ask how the heating and hot water are controlled, and whether you can set the times for your room.
- Agree with housemates when the heating comes on, especially around early starts and night shifts.
- Close doors to keep heat in, and use curtains at night.
Condensation and damp
- Open a window briefly each day, use extractor fans when cooking and showering, and keep lids on pans.
- Dry washing in a ventilated space rather than on radiators in a closed bedroom.
- Wipe moisture off windows and tell the landlord early if you see mould; see damp and mould in a rented room.
Draughts and heaters
Draught strips and thicker curtains help. Check with your landlord before using a portable heater, and never leave one unattended or near bedding.
If the heating fails
Report it straight away, in writing, and keep a record. See repairs in a rented room. For how bills fit into your rent, see bills included explained.

Common questions
What if the heating stops working?
Tell the landlord straight away and keep a record of when you reported it. Heating and hot water are normally the landlord's to repair, depending on your agreement.
How do I stop condensation in my room?
Keep some ventilation, dry washing outside the bedroom where you can, wipe moisture off windows and keep furniture slightly away from outside walls.
Should I use a portable heater?
Check with your landlord first. Portable heaters raise fire and power risks, so use only safe, approved models and never leave them unattended or near bedding.
