Wi-Fi and broadband in a shared house
A good connection matters for work, study and keeping in touch. A few questions early on save frustration later.
Questions to ask before you move in
- Is internet included in the rent, or is it a separate cost? See what bills included means.
- Is the connection fibre or something slower, and is there a fair-use limit?
- Does the signal reach your room, or is it strongest only near the router?
Checking at a viewing
Run a speed test on your phone in the room you would use. Our viewing checklist covers other things worth checking.
Working or studying from home
If you take video calls, look for a stable connection rather than just a headline speed. See working from home in a rented room and studying and training from a rented room.
Sharing fairly
- Agree sensible habits with housemates, such as large downloads at quieter times.
- Never change router settings or passwords without asking.
- If it drops, note the dates and times and tell the house contact so it can be reported.

Common questions
Should I ask if Wi-Fi is included?
Yes. Ask before you commit whether internet is in the rent, who the provider is and whether there is any fair-use limit.
How can I test the connection at a viewing?
Ask to try a speed test on your phone in the room you would use, and check the signal in your room as well as the hall.
What if the internet keeps dropping?
Tell the landlord or house contact with the dates and times it happens, so it can be reported to the provider.
