Commuting and parking when renting a room: what to check
A room that looks close to work on a map can be a different story at 5am or after a night shift. Check the journey and the parking before you commit.
Test the real journey
- Travel the route at the times you will actually go, not mid-morning on a quiet day.
- Allow for the last stretch: site entrances, security checks and walking from the car park to your workplace.
- If you rely on buses or trains, check the first and last services against your shift times.
Parking
- Ask whether parking is available, whether it is shared, and if any permit, charge or time limit applies.
- Check street rules nearby, including permit zones and restrictions at different times of day.
- Do not assume a space is yours because others park there. Get the answer in writing.
Bikes and walking
Ask where a bike can be stored securely and whether it can be kept inside. Check your insurance covers it. If you walk, look at the route in the dark.

Common questions
How do I check a commute properly?
Test the real route at the hours you will travel, including early starts and late finishes, and allow for traffic, buses that stop early and entrance queues at your workplace.
Should I ask about parking before I sign?
Yes. Ask whether parking is available, whether it is shared, if any permit or charge applies and what the rules are. Get the answer in writing.
What about bikes?
Ask where a bike can be stored securely and whether it is allowed inside the house. Check your contents or bike insurance covers it.
