Moving to Barrow-in-Furness for work: the honest guide

Updated October 2026 · by Outstanding Property, a local landlord in Barrow and Dalton

You've taken a job at the shipyard, the hospital or the port and you're trying to work out what you're moving to. Google gives you Reddit threads and a Zoopla page with no rents on it. This is the local version: where to live, what it costs, how the commute really works, and what the town is like once the novelty wears off.

Plan your work move

Download the Furness work-move planner (PDF, one A4 page). Print it to record your confirmed reporting entrance, shifts, complete commute, room costs and move-in tasks. It is a blank planning sheet, not a booking or a room offer.

  1. Confirm work and arrival: your start or induction date, reporting entrance, hours and key-collection plan.
  2. Check each room-to-work journey: both directions at the times you need, including walks, changes, parking, cost and a fallback.
  3. Compare written terms: charged periods, bills and caps, upfront cash, notice and what happens while you are away. The contractor quote worksheet gives more room for comparing two quotes.
  4. Prepare move-in: documents the landlord accepts, the room inventory, key collection and your first-week tasks.

Keep the sheets together: download the work-move print pack (ZIP, 92 kB). It contains the planner, the room-viewing checklist (PDF) and the quote worksheet (PDF), plus a README and checksums. Each PDF retains its original document and source-check dates; assembling the pack does not refresh those checks.

Barrow in one paragraph

Barrow-in-Furness sits at the tip of the Furness peninsula, close to the Irish Sea and the Lake District. Shipbuilding remains part of its working life: BAE Systems' own Barrow page describes its submarine work and engineering careers. Other workplaces include Furness General Hospital, offshore wind operations and the gas terminals. In July 2025, Westmorland and Furness Council announced Team Barrow's ten-year plan, covering housing, transport and public services. A programme announcement does not establish current room supply or a completion date for new housing. Plan your move around your confirmed workplace and shifts, and check the journey from the area you are considering.

Where to live

Compare the complete journey to your workplace entrance, including your shift time, parking and any walk from a station or bus stop. A town-wide driving time cannot settle the commute from an individual home. The table gives route questions to check before choosing an area.

What it costs

ONS figures checked 29 October 2026 against the release updated 21 October 2026. They cover Westmorland and Furness, not a new Barrow market survey; house-price estimates are provisional and subject to revision. Council charges were checked separately on 15 October 2026 and refer to 2026/27; check the band, parish and circumstances that apply to you.

Finding somewhere

Compare current adverts and ask about their terms rather than assuming the dated snapshot still applies. Of the 127 Barrow adverts counted on 2 September 2026, 96 carried SpareRoom’s agent label and 27 its live-out-landlord label. The count does not establish how much of the market any portal covers, typical monthly supply or how quickly rooms let. For how these asking rents compare with local pay and the shared-rate housing benchmark, see the affordability index.

What to check: exactly what "bills included" covers (our explainer), who your housemates are and how long they stay, the inventory and the deposit rules for your agreement. Check HMO licensing with the council: the large-HMO rules include five or more people forming more than one household, shared facilities and rent paid by at least one tenant or their employer; smaller HMOs may also need a licence. See our licence guide. If a room is unusually cheap, find out what its charge and terms cover.

Licensing wording checked 15 October 2026 against GOV.UK HMO licensing requirements; this is not a compliance check of a particular property.

Getting around

Operator pages and the relevant weekday and Sunday bus timetable tables checked 15 October 2026. Services can change; use the operator’s current information for your travel date. No door-to-door commute time is guaranteed.

Shift life

The yard and the hospital both run round the clock. If you're on shifts, the house matters more than the area: you want housemates who work too, a room with a proper bed and blackout curtains, a kitchen you can use at 6am, and parking outside. Ask before you sign, not after. Our houses are working households by design — it's most of what we're for.

Checking an area before you move

Visit the area at the times you expect to leave for work and return home. Check the route to your actual workplace entrance, lighting, transport and parking arrangements, and the shops or services you expect to use. A town-wide description cannot settle whether a particular street and routine suit you.

For recorded-crime information, data.police.uk provides street-level crime and outcome data, while the ONS Police Force Area tables cover police forces and Community Safety Partnership areas. Read the source definitions and geographical scope. We have not published a comparative crime rate or a safety ranking for Barrow or its neighbourhoods.

Crime-data source routes checked 15 October 2026. These links identify official datasets; no local crime rate was calculated and no individual's safety is predicted.

Common questions

Is Barrow-in-Furness a nice place to live?
It's a working town at the end of a peninsula, not a chocolate-box one — but it has the sea on three sides, the Lake District nearby, cheap housing by national standards and the friendliest pub culture you'll find. People who come for a contract often stay. Some streets are tired; the same is true of any industrial town.
Is Barrow safe?
Safety can vary by street, time and personal circumstances. Check the linked official crime sources, visit the area at the times you expect to travel, and consider the route to your workplace. We have not published a comparative crime rate or a neighbourhood safety ranking.
What are the best areas of Barrow to live in?
Compare the route to your actual workplace entrance, your shift times, transport, parking and the area itself. Barrow Island, Hindpool, Newbarns, Hawcoat, Roose and Walney offer different settings within Barrow; Dalton and Ulverston are separate towns. Check the complete journey before choosing, including the walk from a station or bus stop.
How much does it cost to live in Barrow?
The Barrow median asking rent across 127 priced SpareRoom adverts was £135 a week (£585 a month) on 2 September 2026; bills varied. For wider context, ONS’s 21 October 2026 release puts the wider-area one-bedroom private rent estimate at £606 a month for September 2026 and the provisional average house price at £231,000 for August 2026. Those are wider-area averages, not Barrow asking prices. Council tax depends on parish, band and circumstances; check the official sources below and budget for bills and travel.
How do I get to Barrow without a car?
Use Northern’s journey planner for your travel date and Stagecoach’s local timetables for buses. Check the first and last services, changes, weekend or holiday patterns and the walk between your stop and the workplace entrance. A station-to-station time does not include the whole commute.
