Making friends when you move for work
Moving for work often means starting again socially. A few small, regular habits help most.
Start close to home
- Say hello to housemates, and offer a cup of tea or a shared meal now and then. See living with housemates.
- Colleagues are often in the same position; suggest lunch or something after work.
Go beyond work
- Join a sports team, walking group, class or volunteering group and go regularly.
- Explore the area on days off; see settling in when you move for work.
Look after yourself
Feeling low or lonely in the first weeks is common. Keep a routine, stay in touch with people you know, and speak to your GP or a support service if it does not ease; see also feeling homesick in a rented room. If you work shifts, see shift work in a shared house.

Common questions
How do I meet people after moving for work?
Start with housemates and colleagues, then try a club, sports team, class or volunteering. Going regularly matters more than going big.
What if I feel lonely in a new town?
It is common in the first weeks. Keep in touch with friends and family, build a routine, and talk to your GP or a support service if it does not ease.
Do I have to socialise with my housemates?
No. Being friendly is enough, and many people share the odd meal or evening while keeping their own space.
