Settling in when you move for work
A new job in a new town is exciting, and can feel lonely at first. A few small habits make the first weeks easier.
Build a routine
- Get the basics sorted early: register with a GP, find the nearest shop and plan your route to work. See moving into a rented room.
- Keep regular meal, sleep and exercise times, even on shift patterns; see shift work in a shared house.
Meet people
- Say hello to housemates and agree small things, like a shared meal now and then. You do not have to become close friends.
- Try colleagues, local clubs, sport, volunteering or classes.
- Keep in touch with family and friends at home.
