Post and parcels in a shared house
With several people receiving deliveries, a few simple habits keep post and parcels from going astray.
Keep deliveries sorted
- Put your full name on every order and letter.
- Agree with housemates where parcels and post are left, and pass on anything that is not yours.
Post and missed items
- Never open post addressed to someone else. Mark it "not at this address" and return it to the post.
- If you miss a delivery, follow the courier's card or app to rearrange it.
Updating your address
Tell your bank, employer and other senders your new details when you move; see moving into a rented room. Keep the front door secure when you are expecting deliveries; see keys and security in a shared house.

Common questions
How do I make sure my post reaches me?
Use your full name on every order and letter, and tell senders your new details as soon as you move in.
What if a parcel is delivered to the wrong person?
Check the name on it and pass it on, or tell the courier. Do not open post that is not yours.
What should I do about post for a previous occupant?
Do not open it. Write 'not at this address' on it and put it back in the post.
