Keys and security in a shared house
A few simple habits keep a shared house secure and avoid disputes over keys.
Your keys
- Keep keys safe and do not lend them or copy them without permission.
- If you lose a key, tell the landlord promptly and ask what your agreement says about replacements and cost.
- Do not fit your own lock without agreement; it can affect fire safety and access in an emergency.
Locking up
- Close and lock the front door behind you, and keep windows shut when out.
- Do not let in people you do not know; see guests and visitors.
- Keep valuables out of sight and check what your own insurance covers; see moving into a rented room.
Parcels and post
Agree with housemates where parcels go, and tell the landlord if post for someone else keeps arriving.

Common questions
What should I do if I lose my key?
Tell the landlord promptly. Do not copy keys without permission, and ask who pays for a replacement or lock change under your agreement.
Can I fit my own lock?
Not without asking. Changing locks can affect access for the landlord and fire safety, so get agreement first.
Who is responsible for locking the front door?
Everyone. Make sure the door is shut and locked behind you, and do not let in people you do not know.
