Bikes and storage in a shared house
Bikes, suitcases and bulky kit take up space in a shared house, so it helps to sort out where they go before you move in.
Ask first
- Ask what storage the house has for bikes and large items, and whether it is secure.
- Agree with housemates where things go so shared space stays usable.
Keep exits clear
Do not leave bikes, bags or boxes in hallways, on stairs or by doors. Clear routes matter for safety in an emergency.
Locking up and insurance
- Use a good lock and fasten the frame to something fixed, even inside or in a shed.
- Note the frame number and keep a photo of the bike.
- Landlord insurance generally covers the building, not your belongings. See keys and security and consider your own cover.

Common questions
Can I keep a bike in a shared house?
Ask the landlord before you move in what storage there is. Do not leave bikes in hallways, on stairs or anywhere that blocks an exit.
How should I lock a bike?
Use a good lock, fasten the frame to something fixed and note the frame number. Lock it even if it is kept inside or in a shed.
Is my bike covered by the landlord's insurance?
Do not assume so. A landlord's insurance generally covers the building, so check whether your own contents or bike insurance is worth having.
